Causes & Treatment of Acne

Acne is a common skin condition that occurs when pores in the skin become clogged with excess oil and dead skin cells. This causes raised bumps on the skin that may appear black or white. In cases of severe acne, cysts and skin lesions may also occur. Acne is most often caused by hormonal changes in the body that affect the production of sebum, or skin oil. These changes may occur during puberty, at different points during the menstrual cycle, and due to pregnancy, the use of birth control, and changes as you age. Certain medications may increase your risk for developing acne, including corticosteroids and certain medications.  Some people experience a worsening of acne due to dietary factors, such as foods rich in dairy or carbohydrates.
